We also just finished importing the rest of the releases from the old website. It took us a while to do this! There are probably a few pages that are not free from errors so if you can, please feel free to correct any you find. We are looking for people to contribute screenshot galleries and general notes, so please feel free to contribute. We will have an article describing exactly what we’d like to see on the wiki in the next few days so stay tuned.

Shark week? Welcome to Ecco Month! I realized only recently that I own a large amount of Ecco development material, spanning across all console generations for pretty much every incarnation of the franchise (both released and unreleased). As a love letter to all fans of Ecco, I have decided to show off everything I own in the efforts to preserve everything before it is lost forever.

The month couldn’t start any better than to release something huge. So today, I present to you the unreleased canceled Dreamcast sequel - “Ecco 2 - Sentinels of the Universe”.

Discuss this on the boards here!

This was a planned sequel to Ecco - Defender of the Future for the Dreamcast that got canceled around the time SEGA announced that they would be stopping production on the console and focus on being a third-party developer. Although given the fact that the first game was later ported to the Sony Playstation 2 later the same year, it’s not clear why Appaloosa decided to stop development on the sequel since SEGA was in the process of moving other unfinished projects to other consoles.

This release was part of an auction I dealt with many years a go with a former Appaloosa Interactive employee who had a GD-R copy of perhaps one of the last builds of the game. As you can see, the game was last built sometime during the announcement that Sega would be going 3rd party and production of the Dreamcast would be shut down. A similar nonworking version of the game appeared on ASSEMbler many years ago on a (now dumped) Katana Devkit, with another working version that appeared a few years later on another Katana Devkit. The version that I have is one of the few working GD-R copies of the game that can be dumped and played on an actual console.

This game features a few playable levels via level select with a complete working debug mode. There is no music and sound but perhaps there are leftovers on the disc. Keep in mind, development on the game had only just begun before it was canceled, so this might be perhaps all there is in terms of playable builds.

Other News

A couple of other things today.

I recently did a small interview for this month’s issue of Retro Gamer (issue 156)! Everyone check it out! :D

We’re also on Tumblr now! We’ll be using it as another avenue for providing announcements in case Twitter and Facebook aren’t your thing. Throughout the rest of the month, expect to see all things Ecco. This is only the beginning of Ecco Month, so stay tuned for more exciting (and long overdue) stuff in the weeks to follow.

Enjoy!
