A prototype of Gauntlet (also known as Gauntlet IV) for the Sega Mega Drive.

Notes

  • Despite being released after the final European release, this is actually a prototype of the original Japanese release.
  • Many of the music tracks have differences in comparison to their final equivalent. For instance, the track "Sortie" has a completely different second half that goes unused in the final version. Because of this, this prototype has more in common to the Japanese release at the byte level.
  • In the prototype it says "Game Options", in the final it just says "Options".
  • In the final, you can select individual letters in a table on the upper right hand corner of the screen where that player's status is. In the prototype, you select each character in the text field itself like you would in a normal arcade game.
  • The quest mode plot screen is brighter in the prototype.
  • In the prototype, the Options screen tells you to "PUSH BUTTON!!". In the final, it tells you to "PRESS AorC BUTTON".
  • The BGM track names are different between the prototype and the final Japanese build
Prototype Japanese final
OPENING <Back of Beyond>
EARTH TOWER <WHISPER of PHANTOM>
WATER TOWER <MARCH in the DARK>

FANFARE <Betrayer>
  • In the final, the game has the text "MAGICAL ROOM" south on the hub area in quest mode. The prototype has nothing.
  • The final game prints the total/average play time on the bottom right corner of the screen. The prototype just says "1 COIN = 2000 HEALTH".

Origin

Paradox released " Gauntlet 4 " in July.. I'm confused! Tengen has never
released a Gauntlet for Sega before.. This one has 512k of differences than
Gauntlet 4.. Is it possible Tengen is fucked in the head or what? Anyway,
enjoy the release and look for more!
