A post-release online beta test build of Gran Turismo 4 for the Sony PlayStation 2.

Background

This is a special version of Gran Turismo 4 with an online mode that Polyphony Digital were unable to add to the final version. This version was a public beta that was sent for free to Japanese users (4,700 copies) and Korean users (300 copies) of GranTurismo.com. Although Polyphony did not plan to launch a full version of GT4 Online, the GT4OTV servers lasted 3 months (from June 1, 2006 to September 1, 2006), during which many exciting competitions took place.

The online mode included competitions for 6 players, time trial, chat (text and voice) and an online high score table, also available on the game's website. In addition to the network component, the game has the standard Arcade Race and Gran Turismo modes, and in the latter you immediately receive 110 million credits and 721 cars. Additionally, a North American disc was given to 3,000 members of the PlayStation Gamer Advisory Panel in 2006, a now-defunct, invite-only group where members would beta test upcoming games and talk on exclusive forums. This North American online test likely happened at the same time as the Japanese/South Korean test.

Notes

  • The NTSC-J beta's executable is dated May 1st, 2006. However, the NTSC-U/C beta's executable is dated May 30th, 2006.
