Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (Prototype)

First up we have a nice early prototype of Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi for the SNES! This prototype is very unfinished. It includes alternate level/object layouts, different graphics, some debugging features and more. You can play any level in this prototype by pressing L+R on the second controller.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Crossroads of Time (Jul 3, 1995 prototype)

Next we have a relatively late prototype of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Crossroads of Time for the SNES. This prototype is later than the previously released prototype, but still has it’s share of differences in comparison to the final version. This prototype has an active debugger enabled, and a level select can be accessed from the options menu on the title screen.

DillyDylan was also kind enough as to donate a few prototypes for us to add today as well!

Prince of Persia (Altered build)

First, a weird oddity. This build almost matches the final European version but there is an additional programming credit for “Matt Fro” which was removed in the final EU ROM.

Splitz build gb title.png

Splitz (Altered build)

Another weird oddity. This build also matches it’s final equivalent, but as you can see, it’s actually twice the size in comparison. So what gives? The ROM header was modified to include a new checksum and to note that the ROM is 128kb in size, so it’s not technically an overdump. The last 64kb of the ROM actually belongs to the Game Boy port of Populous, but either or not the version is based on final code or if it’s a prototype is unknown as the data looks fragmented.

Felix the Cat (Prototype)
Here’s the first of the prototypes, a prototype of Felix the Cat for the Game Boy. For some reason, the prototype lacks a correct header so the game might be unplayable on most emulators. The ROM is playable in BGB however, so we recommend playing the ROM with this instead.

Super Off Road (Game Boy Prototype)
And last, we have a prototype of Super Off Road for the Game Boy (there sure are a lot of prototypes for this game aren’t there?). Just like Felix, this ROM doesn’t work properly in most emulators but it does work in BGB, which is one of the most accurate Game Boy (Color) emulators out there. So again, we recommend playing this prototype in this emulator instead.

That’s all for now! Stay tuned for some more prototype goodness soon.

Until next time!
