Jester, the working title of a project named Kinetix, is an unreleased Sega Genesis game developed at Sega Technical Institute. Conceived by artist and designer Rick Macaraeg, it was a game without enemies: players guided the clay protagonist Jester through stages full of environmental hazards which would squish, burn, and otherwise maim him, with the comedy coming from his many deaths. Beginning development in 1991, the project spent roughly three years in production and was planned for an April 1994 release, but was cancelled despite reportedly nearing completion.
Sourced from the floppy disks of STI programmer Ken Rose, this playable April 1991 build showcases a number of mechanics only hinted at in magazine screenshots, such as the ability to turn into a bouncing ball and enter tubes to be transported around the stage.
Notes
- The game may not boot in some emulators.
