A prototype of Athens 2004 for the PlayStation 2.
Notes
- Dated 1 month and 12 days before the first retail release (PAL) and appears to be based off of a European build (possibly April 2nd) due to directly mentioning SCEE upon boot-up and using the European copyright screen alongside options to adjust commentary language which would not appear in retail builds along with having the choice to turn widescreen on or off.
- Begins with a placeholder intro sequence (of which the final did not contain any), various tutorial clips use the same placeholder video consisting of the text 'Tutorial Placeholder Movie' and is watermarked with 'Apr 14 2004 21:12:07 Pre-Master V1.0' on the title screen.
- 'Credits' is noticeably missing from the main menu while the typeface is also slightly different, appearing to be less bold.
- 'Single Event' is called 'Trophy' here although this doesn't extent to the description for arcade mode and seems to imply that you could unlock hidden features according to the description text while this would be edited to remove such mentions.
- Both record menus lack sub-labels (discipline/area, event and gender), therefore leaving a notable amount of blank space.
- 'Load/Save' features Phèvos on the bottom right corner and includes an option to turn auto save on/off which would be removed.
- The 'Competition' menu has various changes when compared to final such as certain tournaments lacking their 'Olympic Discipline' tagline, 'Athletics' originally having 14 events taking place over 4 days and 'Aquatics' being under the label of 'Swimming' although only this menu in retail copies has this particular name.
- 'Challenge' is missing its event overview when selecting it as an option while 'Party' does have its own and is mostly identical to retail apart from having 'Disclaimer' written at the very top rather than the event name itself.
- Other minor changes can be found in loading screens and pause menus mainly consisting of either mentioning the event in question, the mode you are currently in or being called 'Controller X' rather than 'Player X' while gameplay appears identical.
- Miscellaneous Notes:
- Game is emulatable (in PCSX2): Yes (as of October 18, 2026).
- Game contains dongle protection: No.
