A prototype of Out of the Vortex for the Sega Mega Drive.

Notes

  • Unreleased beat 'em up game based on the 1993 comic series of the same name. The game was never announced, referenced, or hinted at in any magazine or tradeshow event and remains a mystery. This build in particular is most likely a prototype meant for pitching the game to potential publishers.
  • The ROM originates from a loose binary file left behind by one of the latest source code backups for the game. The binary file is a PSY-Q .CPE debugging ROM is used in conjunction with the PSY-Q developers kit. The ROM had to be modified for it to run like a standard Mega Drive game. The archive includes both the modified and the original ROM and a modified ROM to play the game using a level select.
  • In comparison to the older prototype:
    • This prototype contains music and sound effects. However, the audio will sometimes hang randomly throughout gameplay. The audio driver is tied to the CPU performance, so the tempo can slow down or speed up depending on the CPU's stress.
    • This prototype includes a title screen with an options menu.
    • Cutscenes and dialog are present throughout gameplay.
    • Additional playable stages
    • The credits sequence is now available.
    • the game ID is present in the ROM header, but it's using the Game ID from Cheese Cat-Astrophe Starring Speedy Gonzales.
  • Level select is present but needs to be activated using a hack. A separate ROM is included to access the level select upon selecting a character.
  • The game can crash at random moments.
