The earliest known file dates back to May 1999, indicating that the game's development started at least during the summer of that year.
Inspirations:
The penguin character design in Tux on the Run bears a striking resemblance to the penguin character in IceBlox, a 1996 open-source puzzle game. This similarity suggests that the developers of Tux on the Run may have been inspired by IceBlox. (and from IceBlox, it seemed to have been inspired by Pengo from 1982, so in all actuality, if it wasn't for Pengo from 1982, the well known open-sourced platformer SuperTux would never have been made. Pretty interesting to think about!)
