A prototype of X-Men: Next Dimension for the PlayStation 2.

Notes

General Differences

  • An NTSC-U preview build dated around two and a half months before the final.
  • Cheat codes don't work
  • Credits button just shows Paradox logo again
  • Practice mode forces you into the Danger Room stage
  • Survival mode isn't available
  • Many characters seem to be locked for the preview build.
  • Story mode only has two cutscenes and two fights without loading times: Forge vs Mystique and Forge vs Nightcrawler (all three locked characters)
  • Forge and Cyclops movelist are empty
  • Move list has a bigger font, resulting in too long names being divided in two paragraphs, the second one turning white
  • Combo strings and throws are shown in the movelist, unlike the final game
  • In practice mode, Change is now Toggle
  • Miscellaneous Notes:
    • Game is emulatable (in PCSX2): Yes (as of March 17, 2021).
    • Game contains dongle protection: No.

Input Differences

  • Beast's Cyclone moves are forward down diagonal instead of the hadouken motion
  • All of Wolverine's Hadoken-like inputs are done through pushing down diagonal + its usual button
  • Toad's Saliva Slap is done through back back + Square, different than the final game
  • Toad's front flop is done through forward forward + Cross , different than the final game
  • Toad's Frogleg Drill is done through Air diagonal down + Cross, different than the final game
  • Jean's and Havok's airborne specials have simplified inputs

Graphical Differences

  • Title screen and loading screens are much more primitive in appearance.
  • Character portraits look different (uncannily so). The miniatures are taken from X-Men Mutant Academy and the big portraits are direct screenshots of their in-game models.
  • There's a yellow X next to the credits icon
  • There are no alternate costumes selectable
  • Meter bars are always blue
  • Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Mystique and Phoenix's default costume is different
  • Toad's hair is lime green
  • Characters have no in-game facial expressions
  • Jean's level 4 combo is slightly different (no final explosion, nor proyectiles hovering over the oponent)
  • Jean's mane has no physics, and is always pulled upwards
  • Havok's taunt has no particle effects

Gameplay Differences

  • Mystique has a bug where she just takes her hair on her free hand
  • Forge appears to be in quite an unfinished state
  • Taunts don't build meter
  • When using L1+button to transfer meter sectors, the characters still punch and kick when doing the input
  • Meter bars don't make a sound when a sector is filled
  • Level 4 combos for Wolverine and Cyclops did a closeup on the character before being executed, even flipping the screen towards the left side
  • Cyclops low Optic Blast does no damage, but hitstuns the enemy
  • Cyclops can't do his Optic Blast Super airborne
  • Wolverine's Level 4 and Level 3 are swapped
  • Wolverine's Level 1 was a full combo (It's just a single swipe in the final game)
  • Wolverine's combo strings are undoable in the final game
  • Counters don't work
  • Havok's airborne Blasts specify which direction will they aim in the move list (in the final game, it just says 1 and 2)

Cheats

  • Press L3 For Debug Menu (by punk7890)
