A prototype of Crash Team Racing for the Sony PlayStation.

Notes

The Cutting Room Floor research
  • This version requires a dongle, which in this case was a memory card that would contain a specific data to be read in order to boot the game. It was used to prevent disc content from being illegally copied or distributed - a patched variant of the prototype has been provided alongside the original.
  • The startup sequence uses static images, and doesn't have any music or Clancy Brown announcing the publisher and developer identities.
  • There is no intro cutscene in this build.
  • The checkered background flag moves diagonally and its color is much darker.
  • There aren't any sound effects in the menus (except for the name entry screen).
  • The character select screen lacks 3D models and always uses the 4-player layout, regarding how many players are present.
  • The Adventure Character Selection is a small box with eight selectable names instead of a full 3D environment for each character.
  • Most of the characters icons are in a primitive state.
  • Sewer Speedway, Parking Lot, and Lab Basement use early names.
  • There is no dialogue or voice clips throughout the gameplay.
  • Some themes have a cut extension at the end of the track that were present in the original pre-console version.
  • Adventure Mode starts in Gem Stone Valley, and you have access to both N. Sanity Beach and The Lost Ruins zones from the beginning. Coco Park and Tiger Temple are also accessible from start.
  • The requirements to unlock new zones are lower, allowing the player to get awards from multiple zones at the same time.
  • There are no boss cutscenes throughout the game.
  • Aku Aku/Uka Uka hints are completely absent.
  • You must collect the letters C, T, and R during a Trophy Race, instead of having a separate challenge. Each letter will be available in different laps, and if you miss any of them, you won't be able to get the token.
  • The requirements for all relic records are placeholders times. Sapphire times vary between 2:18:00 and 2:35:00. Gold and Platinum times are 10 and 30 seconds less than Sapphire times, respectively.
  • Trying to access Relic Race for Slide Coliseum and Turbo Track will crash the game due to a memory allocation error.
  • Oxide's ghosts are absent in Time Trial. Instead, you will face another ghost that copies the skin of your current character after beating N. Tropy.
  • Most of the race tracks have minor differences.
